Makna Simbolik Proses Tradisi Malam Balacuik Padapernikahan Di Kecamatan Nan Sabaris Kabupaten Padang Pariaman
Malam balacuik is a traditional wedding ceremony in Nan Sabaris Subdistrict, Padang Pariaman Regency. This tradition has several symbolic aspects represented by physical objects, social interactions, and spoken words. The meaning of carrying out traditions is no longer known to the public, especially young people. This research aims to determine the meaning of symbolic situations, the meaning of social interaction products, and the meaning of interpretation in the malam balacuik tradition.
The study was conducted using symbolic interaction theory by Herbert Blumer. The study was conducted using qualitative methods with a descriptive approach. This research involved nine informants, including three traditional leaders from Nan Sabaris Subdistrict, two young assistants who were responsible for helping in the tradition event, two parents who performed the tradition, and two prospective of brides and grooms. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observation and documentation.
The results showed that the meaning of symbolic situations in the malam balacuik tradition consists of physical objects in the form of ayam singgang, palacuik made by coconut leaves, aguang, long cloth, potpourri, umbrella, tall tray, carano, lapiak balambak and henna. The social objects of the malam balacuik tradition are baetongan, apologizing to the family, baiyeh, balacuik, and eating together. The meaning of social interaction products in the malam balacuik tradition is in the form of the perspective of the traditional leaders, the youth, the parents and the prospective marapulai. The traditional leaders interpret it as a tradition to provide the knowledge possessed by traditional leaders to the prospective marapulai so that he can take responsibility. The youth interpret it to mature and purify the prospective marapulai. The parents interpret it as a tradition that provides provisions for their son to be responsible. The prospective marapulai interpret it as a means of preserving culture and sending prayers from traditional practitioners. The meaning of the interpretation of the malam balacuik tradition is in the form of closed actions and open actions. Closed actions include internal and external motivations from those attending the tradition, including feelings of joy, emotion and tension. Open actions include the facial expression of the party receiving the tradition with a tense and shocked face, which is a form of sincerity in performing the malam balacuik tradition in the wedding ceremony.
