Komunikasi Lintas Budaya Antara Mahasiswa Indonesia Dan Amerika Serikat Dalam Beradaptasi Budaya Pada Program Pertukaran Pelajar Iisma (Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards)
IISMA is one of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) programmes under the management of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology which provides opportunities for Indonesian students to study at partner universities abroad for one semester. With this opportunity, Indonesian students are faced with the challenge of the ability to adapt and communicate cross-culturally when interacting with society in the United States, so special attention is paid to overcoming the cultural and social challenges faced by Indonesian students during the cultural adaptation process in the United States, especially in the IISMA programme.
This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive qualitative research methods, and uses data collection techniques in the form of interviews conducted on 7 students from Indonesia who participated in the IISMA programme in the United States. In analysing, researcher used the theory of cultural adaptation by Young Yun Kim and strengthened by the U Curve Hypothesis by Kalervo Oberg, as well as the cross-cultural communication model by Gudykunst and Kim.
The results of this study are that in interacting with American cultural society, Indonesian students carry out a cultural adaptation process, namely enculturation, acculturation, and deculturation, and in this process students go through 3 phases, such as honeymoon, crisis, and adjustment. There are several factors that influence their adaptation process, namely social identity, communication competence, and environment, and in cross-cultural communication shows the contribution of conceptual filters according to the Gudykunst and Kim model, which affects the adaptation process of Indonesian students in the United States.
