REPRESENTATION OF QUARTER LIFE CRISIS IN ELEMENTAL: FORCE OF NATURE MOVIE

Quarter life crisis is a period of emotional crisis faced by people aged 20-29 years when they begin to move from an unstable, open, and exploratory life structure, to a more established, predictable, and productive life structure. Film is one of the mass communication media to convey social reality. One of the social realities, namely the quarter life crisis, is also depicted in movie, one of which is Elemental: Force of Nature movie. This study aims to analyze the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth of quarter life crisis in the Elemental: Force of Nature movie.
This research uses qualitative methods with Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis. This study's type of data consists of primary and secondary data. The primary data in this study is the entire Elemental: Force of Nature movie, while the secondary data in this study are books, journals, literature, and other sources related to the quarter life crisis and Elemental: Force of Nature movie. Data were obtained using observation and documentation methods. The data analysis unit chosen is a scene representing a quarter life crisis consisting of 15 scenes. The technique of checking the validity of the data used is the source triangulation technique.
The results of the study show the meaning of the denotation, connotation, and myth of the quarter life crisis in Elemental: Force of Nature movie is reflected in the depiction of the factors that cause quarter life crisis which are categorized as internal or internal factors of the individual and external factors, namely factors that come from outside the individual. This film also shows the stages or phases of a person experiencing a quarter life crisis, namely the locked in, separation-time out, exploration, and rebuilding phases experienced by the character. In addition, this film also raises the meaning of myths about women parent-child relationships, social class, and Korean American immigrant culture.
