THE COMMUNICATION EXPERIENCES AND SELF-CONCEPTS OF TEENAGERS RAISED BY A SINGLE FATHER IN PEKANBARU

This research is motivated by the author's interest in the prevalence of the phenomenon of teenagers being raised by single fathers working in Pekanbaru. These teenagers are raised by their fathers due to divorce or the death of their mothers. Not all teenagers can accept that they are now only being raised by a single father. Various challenges are faced by teenagers in living their lives and trying to accept with the conditions they experience. Therefore, this research aims to explore the communication experiences, self-concepts, and the meaning of fathers for teenagers raised by single working fathers in Pekanbaru.
This research uses a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach and utilizes the phenomenology theory of Alfred Schutz and the symbolic interaction theory of George Mead. The research consists of 6 informants selected using purposive techniques. Data and information are collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, source triangulation, and drawing conclusions. To ensure data validity, the author uses prolonged observation techniques, increases perseverance, and expands reference materials.
The results of the research indicate that the pleasant communication experiences of teenagers raised by single fathers in Pekanbaru consist of receiving sufficient support from their fathers, having good relationships in their friendship, being proud to be independent, achieving in their areas of expertise, and finding it easy to express feelings. Unpleasant communication experiences include receiving negative comments from neighbors and difficulty expressing feelings of sadness to others. Furthermore, the self-concept of teenagers raised by single fathers consists of positive self-concepts and negative self-concepts. Positive self-concepts include self-acceptance of being raised by a single father, paying attention to one's own appearance, having clear aspirations and goals in life, and having high self-confidence. Negative self-concepts include neglecting one's own health and not yet accepting the condition of not having a mother. Lastly, the meaning of fathers for teenagers raised by single fathers includes fathers being a reason to survive, the role of fathers as reminders in determining life principles, and the happiness of single fathers being a sincere responsibility.
