The high divorce rate in Pekanbaru City generally leads to the assumption that children, especially adolescents, experience negative impacts from parental divorce due to the vulnerable nature of this developmental stage. However, this study aims to explore cases where adolescents are motivated by their parents' divorce and consequently achieve significant accomplishments. The research seeks to understand the interpersonal communication dynamics between parents and children in families undergoing divorce and how these interactions can positively influence adolescents.
The research methodology employed is a qualitative approach with a case study design. The study's subjects consist of ten individuals: five adolescents whose parents are divorced and the five parents of these adolescents. Data collection methods include interviews, observations, and documentation. The data analysis process involves data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data is ensured using source triangulation techniques involving a child clinical psychologist.
The results of the study reveal differences in communication patterns between each informant and their parents, based on aspects of interpersonal communication and self-disclosure theory. These findings indicate that the quality of communication between parents and children post-divorce can vary significantly, with some cases demonstrating supportive and motivating communication that helps adolescents excel despite challenging circumstances.
