COMMUNICATIONS OF EXTENSION OF THE AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT IN INCREASING RICE HARVEST YIELD OF SUNGAI MANDAU DISTRICT SIAK REGENCY

Sungai Mandau is one of the rice-producing sub-districts that continues to experience a decrease in the number of harvests due to pest attacks. This is due to the lack of understanding of farmers in Sungai Mandau, thus requiring the assistance of extension workers. An extension agent is essential in conveying knowledge and mobilizing the target's interest to make changes through the diffusion of innovations that arise in extension efforts. The sustainability of the agricultural sector in the long term requires the role of extension workers to communicate an innovation to farmers so that there are several aspects that need to be considered by extension workers when diffusing such as characteristics, methods, and barriers. This study aims to examine the characteristics of the extension workers in Sungai Mandau, examine the methods used, and determine the obstacles that hinder extension activities in Sungai Mandau.
This research uses qualitative research methods with a descriptive approach. There were eight research subjects consisting of the chief extension analyst, extension coordinator, three extension workers, and three heads of the Sungai Mandau farmer group, and one farmer who was determined using purposive techniques. Data collection was carried out by interviews, observation and documentation. The data analysis technique uses the Miles of Huberman model which is carried out by collecting data, reducing data, presenting data. and drawing conclusions. Meanwhile, the data validity checking technique uses source triangulation.
The research results show that extension agents need credibility to increase farmers' trust in extension agents so that the diffusion process can run effectively. To create credibility, the Mandau River Extension Officer needs to build relationships in a friendly manner, not be arrogant, and recognize the character of farmers, be generous, happy to share, and be professional. Not only is it hoped that farmer credibility will have the appeal of being easy to adapt to farmers. When the instructor goes to the field, he or she should be able to analyze the approach method that will be used according to the situation and conditions that occur in the field. The method approach used by the Mandau River extension agents consists of individual, group and indirect approaches. In the Mandau River extension, internal obstacles often occur in the form of farmers' apathy and egocentricity. Obstacles also come from external sources, namely natural conditions, wild animal attacks and schedule uncertainty.
