Quarter life crisis is a crisis period experienced by individuals between the ages of 19 and 30. This period is often experienced by students who are completing their studies or have just graduated from college. This also happened to students in Pekanbaru City. This transition to adulthood creates stress and uncertainty that can cause psychological difficulties. Many individuals feel unprepared for the change in responsibilities, which can lead to emotional crises such as frustration and depression. Therefore, good family communication is needed to deal with these crisis conditions. The aim of this research is to find out how family communication is in dealing with the Quarter life crisis among students in Pekanbaru City.
This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection methods in the form of observation, interviews and documentation. The method used to determine research subjects is the purposive technique. The informants in this study were 12 people consisting of 3 families of students who experienced a Quarter life crisis and 3 students who experienced a Quarter life crisis in Pekanbaru City. This research uses family communication theory by Galvin, Bylund, and Hecht. According to Miles and Huberman, the data analysis techniques used in this research are data collection, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The technique for checking the validity of this research data is triangulation.
This research shows that family communication plays an important role in helping individuals get through times of crisis in three dimensions, namely internal and external dimensions, such as daily conversations, making children share their feelings and developments openly. Parents who are actively involved help children in the midst of difficulties. External interactions can provide emotional support but can also provide pressure that influences internal dynamics. The structural dimension discusses how each family member has their own role. The functional dimension discusses how family communication builds closeness between members, handles conflict with empathy, and conveys family values. Overall, this research emphasizes the importance of effective communication and family support in helping college students navigate the Quarter life crisis and maintain their emotional well-being.
