ETHNOGRAPHY OF COMMUNICATION IN THE PROCESSION OF THE TRADITIONAL CEREMONY BATAGAK GALA PANGULU CANIAGO TRIBE IN NAGARI CUPAK SUB-DISTRICT GUNUNG TALANG DISTRICT SOLOK DISTRICT

This research is motivated by the difference in the procession of the batagak gala penghulu traditional ceremony which is a traditional ceremony in Minangkabau to appoint a new leader for a group. The difference in the procession of this ceremony occurred in the caniago tribe in Nagari Cupak, usually the procession of this traditional ceremony will be carried out when a pangulu has passed away and the title will be passed down to his nephew (tanah kuniang), but this time there was a violation of custom committed by the pangulu in the form of marrying a woman from the same tribe as himself, this is considered a violation because in Minangkabau there is a prohibition on marrying from one tribe because one tribe is considered brothers. Therefore, this study aims to determine the communicative situation, communicative events and communicative acts in the procession of the Batagak gala pangulu traditional ceremony of the caniago tribe in cupak nagari, gunung talang sub-district, solok district.
This research uses qualitative research methods with a communication ethnography approach. The research subject used a purposive technique and obtained as many as 4 informants. Data collection techniques in this study used through observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. Validity checking techniques use source triangulation.
The results of the study show that the first communicative situation that occurs in this ceremony is divided into two, namely before the ceremony (preparation) and during the ceremony, held in the caniago tribe's gadang house and attended by the base person, paternal family, niniak mamak 4 bajinih, urang siak, malin, manti, dubalang and special invited guests. The second communicative event consists of the type of event in the form of conversation, the topic of the event authorizes the title, the purpose and function is to inform the community and legally lower the title, the event setting is in the form of time setting, place and sitting position, the participants who participate are traditional leaders who are specially invited, the form of the message is verbal and non-verbal, the content of the message of this ceremony is to ask permission from the customary tokh and authorize the title, the sequence of actions starts from the opening of urang pangka followed by eating basamo then babaleh speech and authorizing the last title of prayer together, the rules of interaction here occur between urang pangka with bako and niniak mamak, the norms and values of this ceremony in the form of cultural values, the value of togetherness and the value of respect and appreciation. The third communicative act is knowing the norms and being proficient in the implementation of the Batagak gala pangulu traditional ceremony.
