WOMEN REPRESENTATION IN TAYLOR SWIFT’S SONG TRILOGY
(CARDIGAN, AUGUST AND BETTY)

The song trilogy Cardigan, August and Betty is the three songs that have entitled story that presented in Taylor Swift’s Folklore Album released in 2020. This trilogy consist a story of Teenage Love Triangle that tells the different perspectives and time – setting between three different characters Betty, James and Augustine. The trilogy represented women in a relationship and the gender inequality phenomenon that existed within a romantic relationship that puts women in an disadvantage position. This research aims to analyses women representation in the Teenage Love Triangle song trilogy by Taylor Swift.

The research used qualitative method with critical paradigm using critical discourse analysis model by Sara Mills. The unit analysis for this research data are the song lyrics of Cardigan, August and Betty along with Cardigan’s music video as the only song released with it by analysing eight unit scene from the music video. The data analysis technique using Sara Mills critical discourse analysis model with three level analysis such as macro analysis for the social situation, micro analysis for subject – and object situation and writer and listener position.

The result showed there is a gender inequality between Betty, James and Augustine within the storytelling in this trilogy. The perspective of each characters represented in each songs as well as their interaction with one another. In macro position, showed the gender inequality position represented specifically in their romantic relationship which is man holding more control and more dominant compared to woman that is shown in the situation where James could have a relationship with Betty and Augustine that still reflects patriarchal culture. Furthermore, in macro analysis also picturize women in postmodern feminism who is able to voice their opinion and capable for making a decision for herself. In micro level analysis, women is represented as subject and object in the storytelling within the song lyric. The picturization such as, a women who tells about her own story in Cardigan and August, and man in subject position tells a story about woman as the object in Betty. In writer and reader analysis, listener is brought to nostalgia towards actions that been done by a woman in her past also writer depict the innocent characteristic of the actors in this trilogy to strengthen the time – setting of the teenage love story. Moreover, writer brought listener to feels the dynamic of Betty, James and Augustine’s relationship, where James could lead the directions of the relationship. Betty who could take more wise action is picturized in Cardigan, hopeful and naive Augustine is picturized in August, but James choosing with Betty is picturized in Betty.
