Implementasi Objektivitas Dan Kode Etik Jurnalistik Dalam Pemberitaan Pelecehan Seksual Di Bahana Mahasiswa
The increasing issue of sexual harassment at the University of Riau has not escaped the attention of Bahana Mahasiswa's news coverage. As an independent campus media, it is necessary to examine how Bahana Mahasiswa applies the concept of Westerhal objectivity and journalistic code of ethics in dealing with sensitive issues. The concept of Westerhal objectivity is divided into two main points: factuality and impartiality. Meanwhile, the code of ethics serves as a moral and ethical foundation to ensure that journalists always act with social responsibility, based on the Journalistic Code of Ethics established by the Press Council and 29 press organizations on March 24, 2006, which contains 11 articles. The purpose of this study is to examine how the Westerhal objectivity concept and the journalistic code of ethics are applied in reporting on sexual harassment by Bahana Mahasiswa.
This research uses qualitative methods and is analyzed using the concept of Westerhal objectivity and the journalistic code of ethics of the press council. The subjects of this study are members of Bahana Mahasiswa, selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data collection was conducted through document studies from news analysis on the bahanamahasiswa.co portal from October to November 2021, observations, and interviews. The validity of the data was checked using source and method triangulation techniques.
The results of the study show that the three news reports sufficiently adhere to the points in the concept of Westerhal objectivity, especially in terms of factuality. However, in terms of impartiality, the news reports were found to be inconsistent in achieving neutrality, particularly in avoiding bias and providing fair space for all parties involved. In applying the journalistic code of ethics in their reporting, Bahana Mahasiswa violated several articles, namely articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9. Based on the analysis of the journalistic code of ethics in the reporting of sexual harassment at the University of Riau, Bahana Mahasiswa journalists did not fully demonstrate their commitment to adhering to the prevailing Journalistic Code of Ethics.
