Representasi Problematika Glass Ceiling Pada Serial Gadis Kretek Di Netflix
The Cigarette Girl series is an Indonesian drama set in the 60s which was released in November 2023 on the Netflix streaming platform. This series discusses the problematic issue of the glass ceiling experienced by the main character named Dasiyah. Apart from offering entertainment and romantic elements, this series also depicts the situation of gender discrimination in the kretek industry which is filled with sexism and patriarchal culture, which ultimately led to the emergence of the glass ceiling problem. This research aims to analyze the problematic representation of the glass ceiling in the Cigarette Girl series.
This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods with a critical paradigm. The data analysis units in this research were 16 units with 5 episodes. Data collection was carried out with a focus on observation and documentation. The data analysis technique uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis system, namely signs, objects and interpretation.
The results of the research show that Dasiyah, a female figure in the kretek industry, experienced unequal treatment and speech. In the Cigarette Girl series, Dasiyah is depicted as facing various forms of gender discrimination such as gender stereotypes, gender bias, and a masculine organizational culture, influenced by sexism and the beliefs of Javanese society. In addition, Dasiyah's interpretation of interpersonal factors includes limitations resulting from a lack of self-efficacy and beliefs about femininity in Javanese culture. Representations of discrimination experienced by Dasiyah from preference factors include lack of family support, family-work to conflict, and sexism in the family. From organizational culture factors, representations of discrimination can be seen from organizational policies, masculine culture, old-boy networks, gender discrimination, gender bias, and gender stereotypes. Most of the scenes showing discrimination in the kretek industry can be said to prove that there is a glass ceiling problem in the Cigarette Girl film series.
