Analisis Semiotika Pesan Propaganda Pada Iklangame Helldivers 2

Video Games or Video Games are modern entertainment options typically enjoyed by young people. However, for this study, I, as a researcher, will examine the promotional advertisements of the video game Helldivers 2. Helldivers 2 is a video game created by the Swedish indie game studio ArrowHead Game Studio, featuring a Third Person Shooter Cooperative theme. The game was released on February 8th on the Steam marketplace and garnered significant attention among gamers. The reason for its popularity lies in the cinematic advertisements shared on YouTube, which contain propaganda messages. Based on the background above, the research question for this study is: What are the propaganda messages found in the Helldivers 2 Game Advertisement? What are the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the Helldivers 2 game advertisement? What propaganda techniques are used in Helldivers 2?
The research method employed in this study is qualitative, utilizing a literature review approach. A literature review involves studying books, literature, records, and reports related to the problem being addressed. This study utilizes a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, which seeks to uncover denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings. Additionally, the research investigates propaganda messages and techniques used in the advertisement. In Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, denotative meaning refers to the actual meaning conveyed by signs towards the object. Connotative meaning, a key element in Barthes' analysis, signifies that signs have additional meanings beyond their literal ones. Meanwhile, myth refers to how culture interprets the reality depicted by those signs.
The denotative meaning in the Helldivers 2 Game Advertisement is that it invites viewers to join and play Helldivers 2. Its connotative meaning portrays the Helldivers 2 group as bringers of peace and democracy throughout the galaxy. The myth suggests that the Helldivers group are actually colonialists in other galaxies, using the justification of "spreading democracy" to legitimize their actions. The propaganda message conveyed in the Helldivers 2 Game Advertisement is that the Helldivers are a group that brings and safeguards peace, while creatures from outside Earth, known as "Super Earth," are depicted as monsters or predators threatening Earth's peace. Moreover, the short video of the Helldivers 2 game advertisement employs propaganda techniques such as Name Calling, which negatively labels the creatures from outside Earth, and Card Stacking, where falsehoods are presented as truths.
