Fenomena Komunikasi Thrift Shopping Pada Mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Riau
Fashion is not just for style, but there is a special message that is conveyed through what is worn. The meaning of fashion communication, in this case thrift shopping, can be in the form of self-concept, motives and meaning for the user. Therefore, it is very interesting to research the phenomenon of thrift shopping communication towards Communication Science students at Riau University. This phenomenon is also being liked by many students of the Communication Science Department, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at the University of Riau (UNRI) as one of the impacts of the development of the thrift clothing trend, which can be proven by the increasing number of thrift shops popping up along the roads and thrift events. which got the enthusiasm of students majoring in communication science in buying it. Communication Science students consider this used clothing to be the impetus for an industrial revolution where a factory continues to produce or create new clothes or in other words always produces the latest trends, people who are affluent will continue to buy them for the reason of following fashion development trends.
The aim of this research is to identify the motives, meaning and self-concept of students majoring in Communication Sciences, FISIP UNRI, when purchasing thrift shop goods.This research uses a phenomenological approach with a qualitative research type method. The research data was obtained by observation, interviews and documentation with 7 informants using techniques snowball sampling , which technique snowball sampling This is the determination of the informan, which is initially a small number, then expands or enlarges. Data validity checking techniques used include extended participation and triangulation. The author uses the theory of self-concept, motives and meaning in thrift users fashion.
The results of the research are: thrift shopping as a symbol of the soul, self-presentation which has an impact on the consumer nature of Communication Science students at Riau University. And in conclusion, Thrift not just about used clothes, however Thrift has its own value in the meaning of each person who wears it. They wear thrift It feels cool when you use it, and they think they use it thrift is one form of protecting the earth from textile waste which over time continues to increase due to trends fast fashion.
