The manga industry in Japan is one of the most renowned and lucrative in the world, with revenues reaching 675.9 billion yen in 2021. Manga captivates audiences with its high quality and unique narrative techniques, which differ from American comics that typically focus on superheroes. One distinctive element in manga is the use of ateji, which involves using Japanese characters to convey specific meanings or concepts that do not necessarily align with the original pronunciation of the characters. Ateji adds semantic depth and is used to enrich the narrative, develop characters, and create a more complex story world. This study focuses on the use of ateji in the manga Katekyo Hitman Reborn! by Amano Akira, which was published between 2004 and 2012. The manga combines elements of action, comedy, and drama, with settings that involve both Japanese and Italian cultures.
This research aims to answer two main questions: what types of ateji are found in the manga Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and what is the semantic relationship between the ateji and the main words they refer to in this manga. By examining the types and semantic relationships of ateji, this study seeks to provide a better understanding of the role of ateji in manga narratives and how this element enriches the reading experience.
The findings indicate that the types of ateji in this manga reflect the genre, setting, and complex characterization. In terms of semantic relationships, the ateji found mostly align with the principles of inclusion and overlap, but there are also instances where these principles do not apply, such as when the ateji has the exact same meaning as the main word it refers to. Additionally, some data exhibit semantic relationships that are difficult to identify using a semantic approach.
