Komunikasi Interpersonal Pada Pasangan Suami-Istri Dalam Mempertahankan Hubungan (Studi Pada Pasangan Tkw Yang Menjalin Long Distance Marriage Di Kecamatan Tg. Morawa)
The phenomenon of long-distance marriage in Tg. Morawa, North Sumatra, has become an important concern among the community due to the high number of Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) in the area. Data from the labor office of Deli Serdang Regency in July 2024 shows that there were 958 people working as migrant workers, with almost 20% of them married. Economic factors are the main reason why married women choose to become migrant workers, with the hope of improving family welfare through currency exchange differences and high wages. However, this phenomenon also brings great risks to marital relationships, including disharmony and the potential for divorce. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how married couples undergoing long distance marriage in Tg. Morawa maintain their relationship through interpersonal communication.
This research uses qualitative methods to gain an in-depth understanding of the long distance marriage phenomenon. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field notes, and other official documents. This research focuses on the communication process between married couples, covering the wood aspects of understanding, adjustment, empathy, emotional support, honesty, and openness. This method was chosen because it allows direct and real observation of the subject's behavior in its original context, providing a detailed description of the phenomenon under study.
The results in this study found that interpersonal communication plays an important role in maintaining a long distance marriage relationship. With the presence of understanding, adjustment, empathy, emotional support, honesty, and openness which are key in helping couples overcome their relationship challenges. Couples who successfully maintain their relationship tend to be more open in communication, able to manage conflict well, and have a strong commitment to maintaining the marriage. Nonetheless, challenges such as loneliness, lack of trust, and potential conflicts remain and require constant attention from both parties.
