Pekanbaru collects 16.75 tons of recycled aluminium beverage cans each month,
which is a sizable amount but the processing is still very limited. Making products
patterned door bell holder selembayung with lost foam casting method can be one
solution to reduce the amount of recycled aluminium beverage cans and introduce
more regional characteristics of Riau. This study aims to determine the effect of
sand grain size on the level of surface roughness, porosity, and tensile strength.
Cast product patterns are made using styrofoam material that is cut with hot wire
and planted into sand molds with mesh sizes 20, 40, and 60. Molten metal is poured
at a temperature of 700 oC into a mold cavity that has a separation channel system
with an adder. Cast quality analysis was obtained after testing the surface
roughness, porosity, and tensile strength. Observation results show cast products
can be filled up to 98% and have a smooth surface on the use of mesh 60. Reduction
of sand grain size from mesh 20 to mesh 60 can lead to a decrease in the level of
surface roughness from 12.173 ° m to 5.433 ° m, but the percentage of porosity
actually increased from 0.38% to 2.16%. The optimal sand grain size at mesh 60
can be utilized by the metal casting industry as a reference in lost foam casting.
