Bukittinggi City is a densely populated city because of its strategic location. The population of Bukittinggi City in 2022 will be 122,311 people. Population density in Bukittinggi City is concentrated in Guguak Panjang District with a density of 6,045 people/km2, which is partly due to the large number of centers of economic activity and tourism centers. One of the problems caused by rapid population growth and various economic activities is the emergence of sanitation problems, especially regarding waste water. Without realizing it, various activities carried out by humans can have an impact on the surrounding environment. Thus, improvements in the sanitation sector must be immediately carried out by the Bukittinggi City Government. A study of Bukittinggi City's waste management is needed so that it is hoped that Bukittinggi City's domestic wastewater can be managed before being discharged into the environment. This study focuses on domestic wastewater management systems from environmental, social and economic aspects. This study was carried out in Bukittinggi City with the consideration that this area is the largest contributor to domestic wastewater entering the environment.
This research aims to analyze the domestic wastewater quality parameters of Bukittinggi City, analyze the domestic wastewater management system in Bukittinggi City, develop a strategy for domestic wastewater management in the Bukittinggi City area. The method used in this research is to carry out direct observations in the field and followed by laboratory tests to analyze the water quality in the main canal. Meanwhile, social and economic conditions were assessed by providing questionnaires to the parties involved in managing domestic wastewater in Bukittinggi City.
The research results show that the domestic wastewater quality parameters for Bukittinggi City with 3 sampling points obtained the following average values: pH: 6.7, BOD: 2.5 mg/L, COD: 156 mg/L, TSS: 0.23 mg/L, Oils and fats: 0.4 mg/L and Ammonia: 0.5 mg/L. The value obtained is still below the quality standard threshold set in Permenlhk No. 68 of 2016. Meanwhile, for the COD parameter, a value was obtained that exceeded the quality standard limit, namely 100 mg/L.
The domestic wastewater management system in Bukittinggi City is not good enough due to the uneven distribution of the population and the strategies that have been successfully formulated include: Improving sanitation programs by utilizing existing resources and budgets and increasing activities involving local communities to manage the environment it will get even better in the future.
