Indonesian is a subject that can never be separated from language skills. One aspect of skills that is important to teach is reading skills. Reading skills are divided into two types based on class level, namely beginning reading for early grades I, II and III and reading comprehension for advanced grades. Reading comprehension skills at an early stage really need to be taught in order to improve and develop students' effective communication skills. Learning to read using media is more fun and attracts students' interest in reading. Therefore, researchers developed big book media based on local wisdom as a tool to support students' initial reading skills. The aim of this research is to describe the quality, process and effectiveness of developing big book media in early reading learning. The type of research used is Research and Development (R&D) research. with a 4D development model consisting of 4 stages, namely define, design, develop, and disseminate. The big book media developed was tested on 5 students on a small scale and 20 students on a large scale. Data collection techniques use observation and questionnaires. The data analysis technique uses quantitative descriptive analysis. Based on the research results, expert validation results obtained were 92.28% with a very valid category. From the results of questionnaire trials on a small scale, the average was 89.99% and in field trials the average was 86.52% in the very good category. For initial reading skills in the small group trial, the average score was 80% with an overall N-gain value of 72% in the high category, while in the field trial, the average score was 84.84% with an overall N-gain value of 70.60 category. currently. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there is quality, process and effectiveness in the development of big book media based on local wisdom for learning to read at the beginning of class II of elementary school.
