Makna Simbolik Tradisi Mandok Hata Pada Generasiz Suku Batak Toba
In this era of modern development, it is rare for society, especially Generation Z, to still uphold their cultural traditions. In every region or tribe, there are certainly their own traditions and cultures. This diversity is evidence of evolving human behavior. This research aims to examine the symbolic meaning of the Mandok Hata tradition among the Batak Generation Z, focusing on the roles of mind, self, and society in understanding, preserving, and transmitting Batak cultural values through this practice.
This research uses a qualitative approach with in-depth interview methods, involving five informants from various age and experience backgrounds.Data collection techniques include interviews, observations, and documentation. The data analysis technique uses descriptive analysis according to Miles and Huberman. For data validity examination techniques, triangulation is used.
The results of the research show that individual thought plays an important role in understanding and processing the symbolic meaning of proverbs, advice, or counsel conveyed through Mandok Hata. These thoughts treat the words in Mandok Hata as symbols that represent the values, norms, and cultural wisdom of the Batak people. Next, the concept of self in this tradition plays a role in the formation and maintenance of individual identity within Batak society. When individuals participate in the Mandok Hata tradition, they not only strengthen their ties to their culture and community but also reinforce their sense of Batak identity. Furthermore, this research found that society, through the Mandok Hata tradition, plays an important role in preserving and disseminating cultural norms, values, and wisdom from one generation to the next. Social interactions in the Mandok Hata practice strengthen social bonds among individuals in Batak society, making this tradition an important means of transmitting and preserving cultural heritage. The importance of the Mandok Hata tradition in preserving Batak cultural identity amidst social and generational changes, as well as providing insights into how the Batak generation Z navigates and interprets this tradition in the context of modern life.
