Rancangan Pabrik Triasetin Dari Esterifikasi Gliserol Dan Asam Asetat Dengan Desain Alat Utama Kolom Distilasi Triasetin (T-302)
Biodiesel is an alternative energy that can replace diesel fuel. The process of making biodiesel in the triglyceride transesterification reaction produces a byproduct called glycerol, which is approximately 10% of the amount of biodiesel produced. Currently, glycerol has not been processed much so it still has a low selling value. Therefore, glycerol processing is necessary in order to convert glycerol into high-value products. One of the glycerol derivative products is triacetin or glyceryl triacetate (C9H14O6) which is a colorless liquid, smells like oil, and flammable. Triacetin is widely used as an aroma additive, plasticizer, solvent, fuel additive to reduce engine knocking (increasing octane value), and can also be used as an additive for biodiesel. The location of the triacetin plant is planned to be established in the Dumai Industrial Area (KID) Pelintung Village, Medang Kampai District, Dumai, Riau with a factory area of 202,500 m2 . The factory production capacity is 90,000 tons/year.
Triacetin plant design uses an esterification process with glycerol, acetic acid and sulfuric acid as raw materials. Glycerol was obtained from PT Wilmar Bioenergy Indonesia, while acetic acid was obtained from PT Indo Acidatama (IACI), and catalyst (sulfuric acid) was obtained from PT Utama Inti Produk Kimia Industri (UTAKI). The process is carried out in a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) at a reaction temperature of 106 °C and a pressure of 1 atm with a reaction time of one hour. The mole ratio of glycerol to acetic acid is 1:3. The results of the esterification process of glycerol and acetic acid produce triacetin with a purity of 99% and water as by-product which will be processed in the waste processing unit. Water requirements for the production process, sanitation water, cooling water and boiler feed are obtained from Pelitung river waer, Dumai. Electricity supply can be obtained from PLN, UPS, and a generator as a backup, while steam can be obtained by utilizing a WHB (water heat boiler). The waste produced from the triacetin plant is liquid waste originating from cooling water waste and domestic liquid waste.
The planned company form is a Limited Liability Company (PT) using a line and staff organization system with a working day of 330 days/year and an operating time of 24 hours/day. The workforce required to run this company is 268 people, divided into 190 shift employees and 78 non-shift employees. The results of the profitability analysis show a Net Present Value (NPV) of IDR 1,434,543,217,512, Return on Investment (ROI) 35.292%, Payback Period (PBP) 2.83 years, and Break Even Point (BEP) on production capacity 48.267%. From the economic analysis of the factory, it can be concluded that the triacetin plant is feasible to establish with a stable market position and a moderate level of investment risk.
