Analisis Framing Pemberitaan Konflik Hamas-Israel Pada Media Online Kompas.Com Dan The New York Times
The Gaza-Israel conflict has been going on for 76 years since 1948. This conflict came back to life with a series of rockets fired by Hamas into Israel on Saturday, October 7, 2023. This study aims to analyze define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations for the reporting of the Hamas-Israel conflict on online media Kompas.com and Nytimes.com.
This study uses a qualitative research method with a constructivist approach to understand how individuals make perceptions of reality from different backgrounds by analyzing the framing of 20 units of data analysis of the news coverage of the Hamas-Israel conflict from the online media Kompas.com and Nytimes.com which will be analyzed using the concept of framing analysis from Robert N. Entman which includes four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgement, and treatment recommendation.
The results of this study show that: first, define problems on Kompas.com tends to focus more on specific facts and figures, while Nytimes.com emphasizes emotional impact. Second, diagnose causes on Kompas.com relates the cause of the problem to the response to the atrocities felt by the Palestinian people, on the other hand Nytimes.com focuses more on the broader context, such as the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas. Third, make moral judgment on Kompas.com more often highlights the direct impact and historical background, while Nytimes.com tends to raise broader ethical criticism, condemn violence explicitly, and emphasize empathy for human suffering. Fourth, treatment recommendations on Kompas.com are rarely shown explicitly, while Nytimes.com offers solutions to international approaches and diplomacy in some of its news framing.
