Etnografi Komunikasi Dalam Tradisi Doa Padang Di Desa Padang Kunik Kecamatan Pangean Kabupaten Kuantan Singingi
The Doa Padang tradition is one of the unique cultural heritage values or traditions practiced by the community of Kuantan Singingi in Padang Kunik Village, Pangean Sub-district, Kuantan Singingi Regency. In this Doa Padang tradition, there are communication activities in which interactions involve meanings conveyed through physical objects and verbal expressions. The tradition uses attributes believed to hold symbolic meanings during the Doa Padang process. This study aims to analyze the communicative situation, communicative events, and communicative actions within the Padang prayer tradition in Padang Kunik Village, Pangean Sub-district, Kuantan Singingi Regency.
This research uses communication ethnography theory. The method employed is a qualitative approach supported by communication ethnography. The informants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of seven people: the village head, Tuo Banjar (a traditional leader), village officials, local residents, and youth. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation.
The results of the study indicate that the communicative situation in the Doa Padang tradition consists of the location of the event. The communicative event includes the event type, which is a request type. The topic of this tradition focuses on the Doa Padang. The function and purpose of the Doa Padang tradition are believed to be a symbol for requesting that the rice planted grows well and results in a bountiful harvest. The setting takes place in a large field near the rice fields, during the day. The participants include the Tuo Banjar, the village head and its officials, invited district and regency officials, and the local community. The message forms include both verbal and nonverbal communication, such as advice and guidance, and the attributes brought during the tradition. The sequence of actions in this tradition starts with a consultation with the Tuo Banjar, discussions with the village officials, mutual cooperation for the event’s preparation, cooking, speeches, praying, communal meals, and the sprinkling of village medicine. Interaction norms include advice or guidance. The values inherent in this tradition include politeness, mutual cooperation, and respect for customs. The communicative actions in the Doa Padang tradition consist of both verbal and nonverbal messages.
