ABSTRACT
Diphenyl Carbonate (DPC) is a crucial compound in the production of polycarbonate (PC), an engineering thermoplastic with various industrial applications. The current production of PC involves hazardous raw materials such as carbon monoxide and phosgene. To mitigate environmental impact, DPC can be produced via an eco-friendly polymeri/lummus process, utilizing the transesterification of DMC and phenol through reactive distillation (RD) technology. The global market for DPC is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.05% from 2023 to 2029. Indonesia holds significant potential for developing the DPC industry, as there are currently no domestic DPC production facilities.
The planned location for the plant is in Pangkalan Sesai, Dumai City, Riau Province. With a planned production capacity of 90,000 tons per year, the establishment of the DPC plant is expected to meet domestic PC demand and reduce reliance on imports. The DPC plant will require utilities including 547,442.04 kg/hour of utility water, 10,057.97 kg/hour of steam, 317.2187 kW/hour of electricity, and 1,333.16 L/hour of LNG as boiler fuel. Waste from the plant will be treated using an activated sludge process.
The designed plant demonstrates economic analysis results with a total capital investment (TCI) of Rp 4,113,620,325,435.06, a cost of manufacturing (COM) of Rp Rp 2,993,805,448,120.78, and working capital (WC) of Rp 685,603,387,572.51. The product will be sold at Rp 5,857,200,000,000.00 per year. Profitability analysis yields a net present value (NPV) of Rp 2,580,726,220,873.68 with a discount rate of 16%, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 28.96%, a break-even point (BEP) at a production capacity of 35%, and a payback period (PBP) of 6.72 years. Based on these results, the design of the DPC plant is deemed feasible and represents a profitable investment.
