The quality of human resources in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 is the key to national progress, especially through improving education. According to the UNDP 2022 report, Indonesia is still ranked 112th in the Human Development Index (HDI) so there is a need to improve the quality of education. One of the important skills of the 21st century is the ability to think critically which plays a role in knowledge development and problem solving. However, the critical thinking skills of Indonesian students, especially in science subjects, are still low due to ineffective learning methods. The solution offered for this problem is ethnophysics-based learning that integrates physics concepts with local wisdom through traditional tools. Ethnophysics-based learning offers a contextual approach that improves student understanding while preserving local culture.
This study aims to analyze students' critical thinking skills with the application of ethnophysics-based Riau Malay traditional tools on the material of effort and energy and simple aircraft and test whether there are differences in the critical thinking skills of students in classes that apply ethnophysics-based Riau Malay traditional tools with classes that apply problem-based learning (PBL). The benefits to be obtained from this research are for teachers, the tools used can be an option as a learning medium in delivering effort and energy material and simple aircraft to improve students' critical thinking skills. For students, it is hoped that the tools used can improve critical thinking skills in the material taught.
The type of research used is Quasi Experiment with Post-test Only Control Group Design, where tests are only conducted after learning. This study used a class that applied ethnophysics-based Riau Malay traditional tools and a class that applied PBL learning. Both classes were selected from the VIII grade students of SMP Negeri 23 Pekanbaru in the academic year 2024/2025. From nine classes with a total of 326 students, class samples were taken through normality and homogeneity tests of previous test scores to ensure normal data distribution and homogeneous variance. The sample was determined using systematic random sampling technique, resulting in two classes with a total of 64 students. Data was

collected through a written post-test with 15 items, the results obtained were analyzed descriptively and inferentially through the Mann Whitney test.
All tests were conducted with a 5% error rate. The initial hypothesis (H0) used is that there is no significant difference after using ethnophysics-based Riau Malay traditional tools. The alternative hypothesis (H1) is that there is a significant difference after using ethnophysics-based Riau Malay traditional tools. Decision making is done based on the significance value, if the significance ≥ 0.05 then H0 is accepted, H1 is rejected and if the significance
