Pengaruh Penambahan Nanoselulosa Dan Surfaktan Span 60 Terhadap Viskositas Dan Koefisien Gesek Pada Ester Sintesis Minyak Sawit Trimetilolpropana Sebagai Bio-Base Lubricant
ABSTACK
Lubrication is an attempt to reduce friction between two adjacent surfaces.
Lubricants are usually petroleum-based, which are non-renewable and difficult to
biodegrade. Alternatively, vegetable oils such as palm oil can be used as they are
a renewable energy source. However, pure palm oil has a low oxidation stability
so it cannot be directly used as a lubricant. Oxidation stability can be improved
through a transesterification process, which produces palm oil-TMP synthesized
esters. In this study, palm oil-TMP synthesized esters were used as lubricant base
material with the addition of nanocellulose from nata de coco (0.3 wt%) and
variations of Span 60 surfactant (0.6%, 0.9%, and 1.2%wt). Lubricant testing was
conducted to assess dispersion stability, viscosity, and coefficient of friction using
a four ball tribometer according to ASTM D-4172 standard. The results showed
that sample A1 with nanocellulose (0.3%wt) and span 60 (0.6%wt) had good
dispersion stability and high viscosity values compared to sample A2 (span 60 as
0.9%wt) and sample A3 (span 60 as 1.2%wt) with viscosity values in samples A1
(10.30 cSt), A2 (10.05 cSt) and A3 (9.697 cSt). The results of the friction
coefficient test found that sample A1 produced the lowest friction coefficient
during the test of 0.054 with a decrease of about 30.7% compared to base oil.
Meanwhile, samples A2 and A3 produced friction coefficients of 0.057 and 0.064,
respectively. The instability of the dispersion and viscosity of the lubricant greatly
affects the friction coefficient results because the additive particles in the
lubricant can settle, so that the distribution becomes uneven. This results in the
lubricant losing its optimal ability to form a protective layer on the friction
surface.
