Hibridisasi Komposit Serat Sisal Dan Serat Kaca Dengan Matriks Polyester Sebagai Alternatif Material Untuk Lambung Kapal
ABSTRACT
Indonesia as a maritime country with vast marine potential, has constraints, especially on wooden ships, such as considerable maintenance and limited wood raw materials. Therefore, combining sisal fiber and glass fiber through a hybrid method is an environmentally friendly alternative. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the volume fraction of sisal fibers and glass fibers on the mechanical properties of composites, including tensile strength, tensile modulus of elasticity, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of elasticity. The composite was made by hand lay-up method with variation of fiber:polyester fraction 45:55, 50:50, 55:45% with sisal fiber:glass fiber ratio 30:70, 40:60, 50:50%, alkali treatment was done with 6% NaOH, using random glass fiber type S-glass, and sisal fiber length 3 cm. The results showed that the composite with a variation of the fraction of resin and polyester 50:50% with a ratio of sisal fiber and glass fiber 30:70 gave the best results, with a tensile strength of 60.4 MPa, tensile elastic modulus of 1,72 GPa, flexural strength of 107,25 MPa, and flexural elastic modulus of 6,74 GPa. The use of sisal fiber tends to reduce the mechanical properties of the composite. The results of this study indicate that the developed composites have not met the Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI) standards for application to ship hulls, where for tensile strength 98 MPa, tensile elastic modulus 6,86 GPa, flexural strength 150 MPa, and flexural elastic modulus 6,86 GPa. This research provides new insights into the development of composite materials combining natural and synthetic fibers as an alternative for ship hulls, which are more environmentally friendly, as well as potentially reducing dependence on wood raw materials, and minimizing the environmental impact of the shipping industry.
