Rancangan Pabrik Propionic Acid Proses Basf Dengan Desain Alat Utama Reaktor Bubble Column (R-101)
ABSTRACT
This report comprehensively outlines the design and economic analysis of a propionic acid plant, with ethylene and carbon monoxide as the main raw materials. The plant is planned to be built in Cilegon City, Indonesia, where the availability of key raw materials, ethylene and carbon monoxide, is in the same area as the plant’s proposed location. The plant is designed to produce 57.500 tons of propionic acid per year, requiring 57.585 tons of ethylene and 86.457 tons of carbon monoxide annually. The production of propionic acid is primarily aimed at meeting market demand for the manufacture of calcium and sodium propionate in Asia, America, and Europe, while also reducing the dependency on propionic acid imports from China. The Indonesian propionic acid market was valued at 1,57 billion USD in 2022, with an expected increase to 3,12 billion USD by 2032. The market growth rate for propionic acid is projected to rise by 7,3% during the 2022 to 2032 period. It is confirmed that the construction of a propionic acid plant in Indonesia has the potential to be a highly profitable investment.
The process used for producing propionic acid is the Reppe Carbonylation process, utilizing BASF technology. Ethylene and carbon dioxide are carbonylated with water to produce propionic acid. The carbonylation process uses a nickel tetracarbonyl catalyst. The plant requires 4,13 MW of electricity, 2,37 tons/hour of steam, and 605,57 tons/hour of cooling water. The plant's utility system is designed with a cogeneration system, where power and steam are generated simultaneously. The energy needs are met by natural gas, requiring 1.741,60 tons per year. The plant's waste is treated using the activated sludge process, producing more stable effluent with low levels of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD).
The economic analysis shows a total capital investment (TCI) of Rp 344.837.237.164 and a total production cost (TPC) of Rp 1.080.961.891.428 per year, with sales amounting to Rp 1.236.171.733.322 per year. The profitability analysis yields a return on investment (ROI) of 35%, a payback period (PBP) of 2,10 years, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 52,84%, and a net present value (NPV) of Rp 608.729.010.687 at a discount rate of 15%. The profitability analysis reveals that the construction of a propionic acid plant through the carbonylation process of ethylene and carbon monoxide is not only financially viable but also a highly lucrative and promising investment.
