Pemanfaatan Microcellulose Limbah Daun Nanas Sebagai Penguat Bioplastik Pati Biji Durian
ABSTRACT
The use of conventional plastic causes serious environmental pollution due to its long degradation time and difficulty in recycling. Therefore, an alternative to environmentally friendly and easily biodegradable plastic materials is needed. One of the biodegradable materials that can be found in nature is starch from durian seeds and cellulose from pineapple leaf fibers. This research creates bioplastics using starch from durian seeds reinforced with microcellulose from pineapple leaf fibers. The ratio of the composition of durian seed starch to pineapple leaf fiber microcellulose was varied based on volume fractions (100:0; 99:1; 98:2; 97:3; 96:4; and 95:5 vol). The method of making bioplastics uses phase inversion. Microcellulose from pineapple leaf fibers is made through alkali treatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH 0.5 M) at a temperature of 70° C for 120 minutes. Next, a bleaching process is carried out with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 3%) at a temperature of 70° C for 60 minutes. The bioplastic was made by mixing durian seed starch and pineapple leaf microcellulose using a hot plate magnetic stirrer for 30 minutes, then adding glycerol at 20% of the starch mass to the starch and microcellulose mixture. After that, the mixture is cast into molds and baked in an oven at 100° C for 90 minutes. The resulting bioplastic was characterized by tensile strength tests, water absorption, and degradation capability. The results of the tensile test on the bioplastic were obtained as 4.590 - 11.881 Mpa, water absorption 2.046 – 1.089%, and degradation capability with a mass loss percentage of 62.4 – 67.5% and degradability of 6.23 – 6.75%/day. The research results show that increasing the variation of the volume fraction of microcellulose from pineapple leaf fibers enhances the tensile strength and biodegradation capability of the bioplastic, but reduces its water absorption capacity. From the tensile strength results, the bioplastic based on durian seed starch reinforced with microcellulose from pineapple leaf fiber still does not meet the SNI standard (13.7 MPa).
