ABSTRACT
An electrical energy plant that uses a synchronous generator when experiencing an increase in load there is a decrease in voltage at the generator output and when the load drops there is an increase in output voltage, so it is necessary to regulate the output voltage by adjusting the excitation current. This research analyzes the performance of a controlled full-wave single-phase rectifier as an excitation system in a synchronous generator. The test results show that the controlled rectifier can produce a direct voltage source in the trigger angle range between 9° to 144°, with the output voltage varying from 0 volts to 55 volts. The use of a capacitor filter with a value of 1000 μF increases the rectifier output voltage from 55 volts to 85 volts, so that the rectifier is able to produce an excitation voltage source in accordance with the generator specifications, which is 85 volts with a maximum current of 0.40 amperes. Testing of the controlled rectifier as a generator excitation system under zero load conditions shows that to obtain a nominal generator voltage of 220 volts, an excitation voltage of 56.8 volts and an excitation current of 0.266 amperes are required. Furthermore, in tests with varying loads, the controlled rectifier proved to be able to recover the generator voltage drop, with the smallest drop at a 30 watt load with a voltage drop of 5 volts requiring an excitation voltage of 61.79 volts and a current of 0.279 amperes, and the largest drop at a 180 watt resistive load with a drop of 54 volts requiring an excitation voltage of 81.5 volts and a current of 0.374 amperes to restore the generator voltage to nominal conditions. These findings indicate that the controlled rectifier can function effectively in maintaining generator voltage stability under various load conditions.
