EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Rancangan Pabrik Propionic Acid Proses Oksidasi Propanal Dengan Desain Alat Utama Kolom Distilasi Asam Propionat (T-101)
ABSTRACT
Propionic acid is a carboxylic acid with the chemical formula C3H6O2. Propionic acid is an intermediate chemical product because it can be used directly or after being processed into salt. Propionic acid is widely used as a preservative in animal feed and grains. The need for propionic acid in Indonesia is still imported from abroad because propionic acid is not produced domestically. According to the National Statistics Agency, in 2023, propionic acid import data will be 7,778.90 tons/year. The establishment of a propionic acid plant will reduce import needs and increase state revenue. The propionic acid factory will be established in the JIIPE Gresik Industrial Estate, Manyarsidorukun Village, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java Province in 2024 with a production capacity of 30,000 tons/year. Propionic acid can be produced through several production processes, namely ethylene carbonation, propanal oxidation, and direct oxidation of hydrocarbons.
The process used to produce propionic acid is a propanal oxidation reaction using a mangan propionat catalyst. The reaction takes place in a bubble reactor at an operating temperature of 40°C and a pressure of 3 atm by producing the main product in the form of propionic acid and several by-products such as water, mangan propionat, and propanal that do not react. Propionic acid is purified using a distillation column to produce a propionic acid product with a purity of 99.5%. The factory requires 489,387 kWh of electricity, 15,816.57 kg/hour of steam, and 317,533,978 kg/hour of cooling water. To meet power needs, LNG fuel is needed as much as 1,266.44 kg/hour.
Economic analysis shows that the total capital investment (TCI) needs are Rp.1,515,299,171,528.63 and the average total production cost (TPC) is Rp.1.938.576.351.955,74 per year, with sales of Rp.2,419,982,887,748.06 per year. The profitability analysis resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of 22.15%, a payback period (PBP) of 4.56 years, a break-even point (BEP) of 39.29% in production capacity, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 30.48% and, a net present value (NPV) of Rp.604.600.192.647,05 at 20% of discount rate. Profitability analysis shows that the propionic acid plant from the propanal oxidation process is feasible to set up and is an attractive investment.
