This research is motivated by the problem that there are still students who
have not been able to reflect democratic character, which can be seen from the
lack of student participation in the General Election (PEMIRA) event. In addition,
there are still some students who do not reflect a democratic attitude that can be
seen in various behaviors, such as refusing to listen to the opinions of fellow
administrators, lack of participation in the decision-making process and personal
factors of students who do not care about the surrounding environment due to the
emergence of individuality, and also influenced by the impact of the globalization
era which resulted in the fading of democratic values. The formulation of the
problem in this study is how the influence of the intra-campus organization BEM
on the democratic character of students at Riau University?
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an influence
of the intra-campus organization BEM in shaping the democratic character of
Riau University students. The benefit of this research is that it is expected to
increase enthusiasm and motivation for students to be able to play an active role in
organizational activities on campus in order to increase insight and train
democratic character.
The method used in this research is quantitative. Quantitative research
method is an approach used in research in a systematic and scientific way to relate
various substances or parts related to it. The research instrument used is using a
questionnaire with 30 statements. The population in this study were all active
students of Riau University with a population of 30,000 people.
Determination of the research sample using the Issac & Michael sample table and
calculation with an error rate of 10% so that the sample size was 268 respondents.
Based on the results of research using IBM SPSS 26 using the simple
linear regression test and the test results obtained, namely the value of the
regression coefficient X of 0.912 with the regression equation Y = 37,179 +
0.912x states that every 1% increase in the value of the BEM intra-campus
organization variable at Riau University, the value of the democratic character of
Riau University students increases by 0, 912. The regression coefficient is
positive, so it can be interpreted that the direction of the influence of the Riau
University BEM intra-campus organization (variable X) on the democratic
character of Riau University students (variable Y) is positive.
From the test results, the calculated F value of 100.733 when compared to
the Ftable value of 3.880 (seen through a confidence level of 95% and a
significance level of 5% and a one-way significance test), the Fcount value of
100.733 ≥ the Ftable value of 3.880 means that between variable X and variable Y
has a positive and very significant effect. Then the processed statistical output is
obtained, that the correlation or relationship value (r) is 0.524 and means that
between variable X and variable Y has a correlation with a moderate level and is
known from the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.275 or 27.5%, then the
influence between variable X on variable Y is 27.5% while 72.5% is influenced by
other variables not examined in this study.
