Representasi Feminisme Dalam film mulan (2020) Dan Film Suffragette (2015)

The representation of feminism in film is increasingly relevant to be studied. Film as a broad cultural medium has great potential to shape and reflect society's views on gender and equality. Mulan 2020 and Suffragette 2015 are two films that try to break gender stereotypes and represent women in a more progressive way and in accordance with feminist values. This research aims to analyze the representation of feminism in Mulan 2020 and Suffragette 2015 using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis.

This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods with a critical paradigm. The data analysis unit of this research amounted to 16 units consisting of 8 units in Mulan 2020 and 8 units in Suffragette 2015. Data collection was carried out by observation, documentation and literature study. The data analysis technique uses Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis, namely the level of words, the level of meaning and the level of discourse to determine and analyze the subject-object position and the position of the author-viewer in a film. Then the data validity checking technique uses data source triangulation.

The results of the research on Mulan 2020, the subject position is a patriarchal culture that limits Mulan's potential. Mulan is positioned as an oppressed object. However, the narrative develops, placing Mulan as a subject who defies patriarchy and gender restrictions. Patriarchy is positioned as an object that must be overthrown. The author is positioned as a critic who opposes the patriarchal system. The audience is positioned to see how patriarchy limits women's potential. Whereas in Suffragette 2015, Maud and the suffragettes are positioned as subjects who oppose the gender-biased legal system and patriarchal culture. The legal system and patriarchal culture are positioned as objects that must be abolished. The author is positioned as a critic of patriarchal structures and gender-biased laws. The audience is positioned to empathize and rethink their views on gender and equality. Then the representation of Mulan 2020 is radical feminism, which criticizes patriarchy as a source of gender oppression, while Suffragette 2015 represents liberal feminism, which demands equal rights, as well as radical feminism, which wants structural changes to patriarchy.
