Peran Greenpeace Dalam Mencegah Deforestasi Hutan Adat Suku Awyu Di Papua Selatan

This study discusses the role of Greenpeace in preventing deforestation of the customary forests of the Awyu Tribe in South Papua. Deforestation in this region has become increasingly widespread due to the expansion of palm oil plantations, particularly by PT Indo Asiana Lestari (IAL). The expansion by IAL demonstrates how non-transparent licensing processes, minimal involvement of Indigenous communities in decision-making, and Ineffective law enforcement have jeopardized the preservation of tropical rainforests, which are vital to the survival and identity of the Indigenous people. In this research, Greenpeace is portrayed as a non-governmental organization that actively engages in efforts to defend Indigenous rights and preserve the biodiversity-rich rainforests of Papua.
This study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. The data was collected by doing interviews, reports, books, journals, articles, websites, and related documents. The research applies group behavior analysis, a pluralist perspective, and David Lewis’ NGO Role Theory.
The research shows that Greenpeace acts as Implementers by approaching climate litigation and providing legal assistance. Greenpeace acts as a Catalyst by conducting advocacy through the internet and encouraging public participation through campaigns and petitions. Greenpeace also acts as a Partner by joining the Coalition to Save Papua's Indigenous Forests and working with Project Multatuli to pressure the government and companies to respect the rights indigenous peoples.
