The use of media today with all its advantages makes it easy for people to access all information. One of the social media that is currently popular and has the most active users in Indonesia is TikTok. TikTok as one of the social media that has an algorithm that can adjust to user interests encourages users to stay connected and follow developing trends, which has the potential to create anxiety about missing out on information or social experiences. The theory used as a foundation in this study is the Uses and Effect theory, which explains that media is used by individuals to meet certain needs, and can have certain effects on the behavior of its users. This study aims to determine how much influence the use of TikTok social media has on Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) behavior in active students of Communication Science FISIP Riau University.
This research uses quantitative methods with a descriptive approach. The population in this study were all active students of Communication Science FISIP Riau University, totaling 925 with a sample size of 90 respondents. Data collection techniques were carried out through distributing questionnaires to respondents using purposive sampling techniques with predetermined characteristics.
The results of data analysis show that the use of TikTok has an influence on FoMO behavior with a coefficient of determination (R Square) of 0.161 or 16.1%. This means that the use of TikTok contributes 16.1% to variations in student FoMO behavior, while the rest is influenced by other factors. These results indicate that the higher the use of TikTok, the higher the level of FoMO experienced by students.
This research provides a significant update in the field of communication that is more in-depth about the relationship between the use of modern social media and its impact on social behavior in the academic context in active students of Communication Science FISIP Riau University.
