School dropout is a social phenomenon characterized by a situation where a school-age child stops or no longer receives formal education at school. There are 25 elementary school-age children who have dropped out of school in Teluk Jira Village, Tempuling District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, from 2019 to 2023. The purpose of this study is to determine the profile of families with children who have dropped out of school and to identify the causes of school dropout. Using a qualitative research method, the study was conducted in Teluk Jira Village with the research subjects being families, specifically the parents of children who have dropped out of school, and the sample was determined using purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations, and documentation, while data analysis techniques involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings reveal that the profile of families with children who have dropped out of school in Teluk Jira Village is characterized by a low level of education, with the last education being elementary school, and occupations as farmers, which can be categorized as middle to lower class or poor. The causes of school dropout in Teluk Jira Village, Tempuling District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, can be distinguished into two factors: internal factors, which originate from within the child, such as laziness and lack of cognitive ability, and external factors, which come from outside the child, including poverty, lack of parental attention, and peer influence.
