Isolasi Bakteri Endofit Dari Senggani (Melastoma Malabathricum L.) Dan Uji Aktivitas Antibakteri Terhadap Bakteri Penyebab Plak Gigi
Dental and oral health problems are still experienced by many Indonesian people, one of which is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus mutans which plays a role in the formation of dental plaque. One alternative to controlling these bacteria is through natural antibacterial compounds, including those produced by endophytic bacteria. The Senggani plant (Melastoma malabathricum L.) is known to contain bioactive compounds, and endophytic bacteria that are symbiotic in their tissues have the potential to produce similar compounds. This study aims to isolate endophytic bacteria from the roots, leaves, and fruits of the Senggani plant and test its antibacterial activity against S. mutans ATCC 25175. Isolation was carried out using the direct planting method, followed by purification, macroscopic and microscopic characterization, physiological-biochemical tests, and antibacterial activity tests using the disc diffusion method. A total of nine endophytic bacterial isolates were successfully obtained, consisting of six isolates from the root and three isolates from the fruit. The results of the antibacterial test showed that two isolates, namely BBSF 1 and BBSD 2, had the ability to inhibit the growth of S. mutans ATCC 25175 with an inhibition zone diameter of 5.09 mm and 7.60 mm, respectively. These results show that endophytic bacteria from Senggani fruit have antibacterial potential against S. mutans.
