An Analysis Of Discourse Markers In Anies Baswedan’s Public Lectures
Abstract: This research aimed to identify and classify the types of discourse markers used in Anies Baswedan’s public lecture videos using Fraser’s (1999) framework. The data were collected using a documentation technique, with the source taken from two English-delivered public lecture videos available on Anies Baswedan’s official YouTube channel. This study employed a qualitative content analysis method. The process involved transcribing the selected videos using the Anthiago application, followed by manual corrections to ensure accuracy, and then grouping them based on theme. The analysis focused on identifying the types and most dominant DMs used by Anies Baswedan in his public lectures. The result of the study showed that the total of discourse markers in 2 Ocassion is 103. Forty- eight elaborative markers, twenty-one contrastive markers, nineteen inferential markers, nine temporal markers, four emphasis markers, and one assessment marker. The findings show that several types of discourse markers were used throughout the lectures, with elaborative and contrastive markers being the most dominant. The use of these markers contributes to the clarity, coherence, and rhetorical strength of the speaker’s message. Discourse markers are important
linguistic elements that help speakers organize their speech and guide listeners in interpreting the flow of information. This research highlight how Anies Baswedan use discourse markers to emphasize key points, structure his argument, maintain coherence, and engange the audience effectively.
