Discourse Markers Used In Abstracts Of Ijesh And Ijebp Journals At Universitas Riau
Abstract: This study analyzes the types and functions of discourse markers (DMs) in 50 research abstracts published in two journals by Universitas Riau: the Indonesian Journal of Economics, Social and Humanities (IJESH) and the International Journal of Educational and Best Practices (IJEBP). Discourse markers serve as essential tools for coherence and clarity in academic writing. Utilizing Fraser and Challeoros' (2018) functional classification, the study categorizes DMs into elaborative, contrastive, inferential, topic relating, and discourse structuring. The qualitative descriptive method was employed to identify and classify the DMs. The findings reveal that elaborative and contrastive markers are the most frequently used, indicating a tendency among writers to build and contrast arguments in their abstracts. The study suggests that increased awareness and training in the appropriate use of discourse markers could enhance the quality of students' academic writing, particularly in abstracts. These results offer valuable insight for both EFL learners and instructors in academic writing contexts.
