This study aimed to evaluate the structure of macrozoobenthos communities and the water quality of the Pengambang River, Rumbai Pesisir District, using the Family Biotic Index (FBI) as a bioindicator. The research was conducted at five observation stations determined purposively based on the variation of anthropogenic activities around the site. Macrozoobenthos samples were collected using Surber and Van Veen Grab, while water quality parameters measured included temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), current velocity, and organic matter. Identification of macrozoobenthos was carried out in the laboratory using standard identification keys. The results showed eight species of macrozoobenthos belonging to six families, with dominance by Limnodrilus sp., Corbicula sp., and Melanoides tuberculata at several stations. The diversity index (H’) indicated low to moderate categories, reflecting ecological stress in the river. FBIvaluesranged from 5.01to 7.25, placing the Pengambang River in the moderately to heavily polluted category. Domestic, agricultural, and livestock activities surrounding the watershed were identified as the main contributors to the decline in water quality. These findings emphasize the need for improved environmental management, including waste control, enhanced community sanitation, and routine monitoring of aquatic ecosystem quality.
