This research is motivated by the phenomenon of figurative language use in literary
works, which often conveys hidden meanings, particularly in Tere Liye’s novel Teruslah
Bodoh Jangan Pintar. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms and functions of
simile and sarcasm, which are the dominant figurative language styles in the novel. The
research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a reading and note-taking
technique. The data consist of sentences, phrases, and words containing simile and
sarcasm, which were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion
drawing. The results show that similes in the novel are identified through the use of
comparative connectors such as ―seperti‖ (like), ―bagai‖ (as), ―laksana‖ (as if), ―seolah‖
(as though), and other comparative expressions. The functions of simile include providing
concrete illustrations, emphasizing meaning, and enriching the aesthetic message.
Meanwhile, sarcasm appears in the forms of explicit, rhetorical, satirical, and comparative
expressions, with the main functions of conveying social criticism, exposing inequality,
and highlighting conflicts among characters. Overall, both simile and sarcasm not only
strengthen the aesthetic aspect of the novel but also play an essential role in delivering
social criticism and deepening the reader’s experience.
