a study on students’ reading comprehension ability on descriptive text at sman 5 pekanbaru

This study examined students' ability in reading descriptive text. This research was
conducted at SMAN 5 Pekanbaru. The research method used in this study used quantitative
method approach. The purpose of this study was to determine students' reading ability in
understanding descriptive text. The research participants were students of class X6 which
amounted to 42 students. The data collection technique in this research is reading test and the
research instrument is reading test which consists of 35 multiple choices questions. The results
showed that students' ability to understand descriptive text varied. There were 69% or 29
students in the Excellent category, 24% or 10 students in the Good category, 2% or only one
student in the Average category, and 5% or 2 students who got the lowest score in the Poor
category. This result indicated that the average grade 10 students at SMAN 5 Pekanbaru have
good reading ability in understanding descriptive text. This research suggests that teachers to
apply appropriate and interesting learning methods to increase students' motivation, interest
and reading ability in understanding descriptive texts. Meanwhile, for students, this research
suggests that students should practice reading and comprehending descriptive text more often
and improve vocabulary understanding.
