the correlation between students’ metacognitive strategy use and their listening proficiency in toefl
This study sought to investigate the correlation between metacognitive strategy as used by Indonesian EFL students from Universitas Riau and their listening proficiency. A quantitative research method was employed to collect the data from the sample. Through purposive sampling, 33 students from third year class (6C) of English study program of Universitas Riau was chosen as the sample. The instruments used in the study are the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) and TOEFL-based listening comprehension test. The results of the study showed that the students reported having a high amount of metacognition with an overall mean of 4.72 and also a high level of listening proficiency with an overall mean of 84.03.Problem-solving had the highest score 4.91, while directed attention had the lowest score 4.41.The correlation coefficient was calculated between two variables using the Pearson Product Moment Formula. The outcome of this analysis is Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.003 and it is lower than 0.05, with the value of Pearson correlation 0.500. It can be inferred that a moderate level of correlation exists between two variables.
