a study on teachers’ use of local language in efl classroom
The use of local language in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning often raises pros and cons among academics. On the one hand, local language is seen as helping students' understanding. On the other hand, its use is considered to hinder the mastery of English. This article explores how the teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Baso use Minangkabau language in EFL classroom as a wise pedagogical strategy to improve learning effectiveness. This research is a qualitative study with a case study design that aims to analyze the situation of local language use by the teachers. The research used non-participatory observation method and instruments such as audio recordings and transcripts of verbal interactions in the classroom. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model which includes data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The results showed that the use of local language by the teachers occurred strategically in some main situations and the use of local language in EFL class when applied wisely and appropriately, can have positive impacts on the effectiveness of the learning process.
