students’ perceptions on the grammar nazi in speaking skill at the eighth semester of english study program
This research aimed to explore the perceptions of eighth-semester students in the English Study Program at Universitas Riau regarding the behavior of "Grammar Nazis" in relation to speaking skills. The term "Grammar Nazi" referred to individuals who frequently corrected others' grammar in a strict or insensitive manner. This phenomenon had become increasingly visible in both academic and social environments. The study used a qualitative descriptive method and gathered data through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with selected participants who had experienced grammar correction during speaking activities. The findings indicated that most students perceived Grammar Nazi behavior negatively. It affected their speaking confidence, caused anxiety, and discouraged them from participating in discussions. While some students acknowledged that correction increased grammar awareness, it did not significantly improve their fluency. Participants emphasized the importance of respectful and private feedback over public or harsh correction.
