a study on the ability of the first year students of smp taruna satria pekanbaru in comprehending procedure text

The objective of this research was to find out the ability level of first year students of SMP Taruna Satria Pekanbaru in Comprehending Procedure Text. The research used a descriptive quantitative method, involving 36 students as total sample. The data were collected in June 2025 through a reading comprehension test consisting of 35 multiple choice questions. The test consisted of 7 components such as : finding the main idea, finding the factual information, guessing the vocabulary, identifying reference, identify inference, identify generic structure and identify the language features. The finding showed that students overall mean score was 48.9, which falls into mediocre level. The highest score was in finding main idea with score of 72.7, while the lowest were in guessing vocabulary and identifying reference, both with mean score of 35. These results indicate that the students faced challenges due to limited vocabulary and lack of exposure to English texts. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that students enhance their vocabulary and read more English texts and teachers needs to find effective strategies to help students improve their reading comprehension.
