This study aimed to analyze the reading comprehension ability of seventh-grade students at SMPN 8 Pekanbaru in understanding descriptive texts. It focused on eight components: identifying main ideas, recognizing factual information, understanding vocabulary, identifying references, making inferences, recognizing generic structure, identifying language features, and understanding social functions. The quantitative descriptive research involved 37 students from class VII D, selected through purposive sampling. A 40 item multiple choice test was used as the research instrument. The results showed an average score of 80.46, categorized as “Very Good.” The highest performance was in identifying main ideas (87.4%) and factual information (86.4%), while the lowest was in language features (65.8%). Most students (56.75%) were in the “Very Good” category, and only 2.7% were classified as “Poor.” These findings indicated that students generally had strong comprehension of descriptive texts, especially in identifying key ideas and details.
