a study on students’ reading comprehension ability in narrative text at smpn 8 pekanbaru
This study aims to describe the reading comprehension ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 8 Pekanbaru in understanding narrative texts. The research focused on eight components of reading comprehension: identifying the main idea, factual information, vocabulary meaning, reference, inference, generic structure, language features, and social function. A descriptive quantitative method was employed, involving 34 students from class VIII-I as the sample. The data were collected through a 40-item multiple-choice test based on narrative texts such as fables and fairy tales. The results showed that the students’ average score was 71.73, which falls into the “Good” category. Students performed well in identifying factual information (84.71%), making inferences (81.76%), and understanding social functions (81.76%). On the other hand, they showed poor performance in recognizing generic structure (54.71%) and language features (55.88%). These findings highlight the need for targeted instructional strategies to improve students’ understanding of text organization and linguistic elements in narrative texts. The study provides insight into students’ strengths and weaknesses, which can be useful for improving reading instruction in junior high schools.
