efl teachers’ code switching: motives, attitudes and students’ perceptions by junior high schools in pekanbaru
This Study aimed to find out EFL teachers’ code-switching motives, attitudes, and students’ perception. The study involved teachers and students of junior high school in Pekanbaru. Participants were instructed to fill out a questionnaire about teachers’ attitudes and students’ perceptions. The teachers were recorded and interviewed to get data types and functions of code-switching in teaching English.
The results show that the most common type of code-switching teachers used in teaching English was intra-sentential switching. Academic functions were dominantly used by the teachers. The teacher's motives for using code-switching center on helping students better understand the learning material. The teachers view code-switching as a practical tool to simplify concepts and make lessons more accessible.
Positive attitudes toward code-switching enable teachers to elicit more thoughtful and confident responses from students, fostering a more interactive and engaging classroom environment. When teachers use code-switching, students easier to understand complex lesson topics and difficult concepts. Most of the students ‘perceptions of teachers’ code-switching were positive. Although some students have different perceptions for certain reasons.
