a survey on interpersonal and social anxiety in listening skill of english study program students universitas riau batch 2023
This study aims to find out the most significance factors contributing to interpersonal and social anxiety in listening skills among fourth-semester students of the English Language Study Program at Universitas Riau, Batch 2023. A quantitative research method was employed, using a structured questionnaire adapted from the Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Questionnaire (FLLAQ) by Marzec-Stawiarska (2013) and the Listening Anxiety Questionnaire by Chang (2008). A total of 104 students participated in the study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS version 30.0, including the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, range, minimum, and maximum values. The findings revealed that Listening Process Factors were the most dominant cause of anxiety, including difficulty in understanding spoken messages, forgetting what was heard, and feeling pressured by limited time to process information. Other contributing factors included Knowledge Factors, Input Factors, and Social Evaluation. These results indicate that listening itself can be a major source of stress for students due to both linguistic challenges and social pressures. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers create a more supportive learning environment, provide meaningful listening practice, and help students build confidence in their listening abilities. Future research is encouraged to apply qualitative methods to explore students’ emotional experiences more deeply.
