an analysis of figurative language in the netflix series “adolescence”
This research discusses the use of figurative language in the Netflix series Adolescence in 2025. The aim of this research is to identify the types of figurative language used in the spoken dialogue of characters in the series, with a focus on Jamie Miller and other significant characters. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with a content analysis approach. The data consist of 50 utterances taken from four episodes. Based on Fananie’s (2002) classification, seven types of figurative language were found: metonymy, metaphor, hyperbole, idiom, simile, personification, and sarcasm. Metonymy was the most dominant, appearing 16 times (32%). The results show that figurative language serves to emphasize character emotions, reflect realistic conversation, and strengthen narrative themes such as identity, trauma, and social pressure. The findings highlight how figurative language contributes to the emotional depth and psychological complexity of the character
